Insights

This study shows TS-1, an oral anticancer drug, effectively reduced gastric cancer metastasis by 74.6% in a patient. The treatment also improved tumor markers and relieved pain with minimal side effects.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • TS-1 is an oral anticancer drug comprising tegafur (FT), gimestat (CDHP), and otastat potassium (Oxo).
  • CDHP inhibits 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) degradation, while Oxo mitigates 5-FU's gastrointestinal toxicity.

Observation:

  • A 68-year-old female patient with Stage IV gastric cancer received TS-1 post-distal gastrectomy.
  • Abdominal CT revealed a significant reduction in metastatic lymph node size from 45x35 mm to 20x20 mm after TS-1 treatment.
  • Tumor marker CA125 decreased from 74.4 to 8.6, and post-operative anorexia and back pain resolved.

Findings:

  • TS-1 treatment resulted in a 74.6% reduction in metastatic lymph node diameter.
  • Significant decrease in serum CA125 levels observed.
  • Resolution of treatment-related symptoms including anorexia and back pain.

Implications:

  • TS-1 demonstrates potent efficacy in managing advanced gastric cancer.
  • The drug offers a favorable safety profile with no side effects over grade 3.
  • TS-1 represents a promising therapeutic option for gastric cancer patients.
