Summary

Staphylococcal sepsis can cause severe lumbar-sacral pain and leg radiation due to intervertebral discitis. Early diagnosis using MRI and CT is crucial for patients with severe back pain and radicular symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Spinal infections
  • Infectious diseases
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Staphylococcal sepsis is a serious systemic infection.
  • Intervertebral discitis is an infection of the spinal disc.

Observation:

  • A 51-year-old male presented with acute, severe lumbar-sacral pain radiating to both legs.
  • The patient exhibited systemic symptoms indicative of infection.

Findings:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) confirmed intervertebral discitis affecting the L5-S1 region and adjacent vertebrae.
  • The condition was associated with staphylococcal sepsis.

Implications:

  • Intervertebral discitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of severe back pain with radicular symptoms.
