Summary

Ongoing apoptosis occurs in heart muscle cells 20-30 days after myocardial infarction (MI). This persistent cell loss may explain progressive left ventricular dysfunction in the subacute phases of MI.

  • To investigate human hearts pathologically 20 to 30 days post-MI.
  • To identify evidence of ongoing programmed cell death (apoptosis) in myocardial tissue.

  • Autopsy examination of two human hearts from patients deceased 20-30 days post-MI.
  • Gross anatomy and light microscopy to identify infarct areas.
  • TUNEL assay to detect DNA fragmentation and quantify apoptotic rate (AR).
