Summary

Aging does not affect dynamic cerebral autoregulation (CA) despite reduced cardiac baroreceptor sensitivity (BRS). This study found that the brain’s ability to regulate blood flow remains intact in older adults.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of aging on dynamic cerebral autoregulation in humans.
  • To compare dynamic CA between young and older adults.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-seven young (<40 years) and 27 older (>=55 years) subjects were studied.
  • Cerebral blood flow velocity and arterial blood pressure were measured.
  • Dynamic autoregulatory index (ARI) and cardiac baroreceptor sensitivity (BRS) were calculated.
