Summary

Posterior plating demonstrated superior stability and fewer hardware complications compared to anterior plating in cervical corpectomy. This study found significantly less screw breakage with posterior fixation, improving patient outcomes.

Background:

  • Cervical corpectomy is a surgical procedure to remove vertebral bodies in the cervical spine.
  • Anterior and posterior plating are surgical techniques used for stabilization after cervical corpectomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy and safety of anterior plating versus posterior plating in patients undergoing cervical corpectomy.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 60 patients undergoing cervical corpectomy, divided into two groups (30 each).
  • Group 1: Anterior plating with Orosco-type titanium plates.
  • Group 2: Posterior plating (lateral mass plating). Titanium cages were used in all cases to replace resected vertebral bodies.

  • Posterior plating is a safer and more stable fixation method than anterior plating for cervical corpectomy.
  • Reduced hardware complications, particularly screw breakage, favor posterior plating in this patient population.
