Background:

  • The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene is implicated in alcohol dependence.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the 5-HTT gene promoter polymorphism and alcohol dependence.
  • To examine the S/L allele frequencies in patients with alcohol dependence, comorbid alcohol dependence and Tourette syndrome (alcoholic-TS), and Tourette syndrome (TS) without alcohol dependence.

Main Methods:

  • Genotyping of the 5-HTT gene promoter polymorphism in 131 alcohol-dependent patients and 150 TS patients.
  • Comparison of allele frequencies between patient groups and ethnically matched controls.
  • Statistical analysis, including Bonferroni correction, to assess significance.

  • An excess of the short (S) allele of the 5-HTT gene promoter was observed in alcohol-dependent patients (47%) compared to controls (39%).
