Summary

Microvessel density (MVD) in diffuse large B-cell lymphomas does not predict chemotherapy response. Factor VIII related antigen (F8RA) stained more vessels than CD-31, but MVD did not correlate with treatment outcomes in this study.

Background:

  • Microvessel quantification is a potential prognostic factor in various tumors.
  • Tumor angiogenesis, indicated by microvessel density (MVD), is being investigated for its role in cancer treatment response.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between microvessel density (MVD) and chemotherapy response in diffuse large B-cell (DLBC) lymphomas.
  • To compare the efficacy of factor VIII related antigen (F8RA) and CD-31 in quantifying microvessels in DLBC lymphomas.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical staining was used to quantify microvessels in 36 DLBC lymphoma patients.
  • Monoclonal antibodies against F8RA and CD-31 were employed for microvessel staining.
  • Patients were categorized into chemosensitive (n=23) and chemoresistant (n=13) groups based on treatment response.

Main Results:

  • F8RA stained approximately 2.5 times more microvessels than CD-31, with 7 samples positive for F8RA but negative for CD-31.
  • No significant difference in microvessel density was observed between the chemosensitive and chemoresistant DLBC lymphoma groups.
  • Mean F8RA-stained microvessels were 54.5 +/- 36.1 in the chemosensitive group and 43.1 +/- 25.5 in the chemoresistant group.

Conclusions:

  • F8RA is a more sensitive marker for microvessel staining in DLBC lymphomas compared to CD-31.
  • Tumor microvessel density (MVD) does not correlate with chemotherapy response in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphomas.
  • MVD is not a reliable predictor of treatment outcome in DLBC lymphomas.
