    Summary

Atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia are common in stomach cancer and ulcers. Their distribution suggests a higher stomach cancer risk associated with body ulcers.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia are common findings in the stomach.
    • These conditions have a specific distribution pattern in various gastric pathologies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To examine the distribution of atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia in relation to gastric cancer and ulcers.
    • To assess the association between these histological changes and cancer risk after gastric surgery.

    Main Methods:

    • Histopathological examination of gastrectomy specimens.
    • Analysis of the distribution patterns of atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia.

    Main Results:

    • Widespread atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia observed in stomach cancer and body ulcers.
    • Distribution patterns in pyloric ulcers and after gastrojejunostomy differ from cancer.
    • A high cancer rate is noted after stomach operations for benign conditions.

    Conclusions:

    • The distribution of atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia in body ulcers mirrors that in gastric cancer.
    • This similarity indicates an elevated risk of stomach cancer in individuals with body ulcers.
