Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging accurately detects osteoid osteomas, outperforming computed tomography (CT) in some cases. MR imaging reveals key features of these bone tumors, aiding diagnosis.

Osteoid osteoma: MR imaging of two untreated lesions.

  • Assessment of nidus, bone marrow, and soft tissue edema on MR.
  • Correlation with patient age, symptom duration, and treatment.

  • MR imaging correctly diagnosed all 10 osteoid osteomas.
  • CT showed false negatives in two extracortical lesion cases.
  • Nidus appearance on MR varied; marrow edema enhanced nidus conspicuity.

  • MR imaging is highly effective for diagnosing osteoid osteoma.
  • MR imaging demonstrates characteristic features, including variable nidus appearance and surrounding edema.
  • CT may miss osteoid osteomas in cancellous locations.
