Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Oncocytomas are typically benign, slow-growing tumors, often discovered incidentally.
  • Bronchial oncocytomas, particularly those arising from mucous glands, are exceptionally rare.
  • These tumors are more frequently observed in male patients.

Observation:

  • A 35-year-old male patient presented with a bronchial oncocytoma.
  • The tumor was identified during a bronchoscopy performed for left upper lobe atelectasis.
  • Histological analysis confirmed a neoplasm composed of oncocyte-like cells with abundant mitochondria.

Findings:

  • Microscopic examination revealed ovoid cells with granular, eosinophilic cytoplasm and small nuclei.
  • Electron microscopy demonstrated significant mitochondrial hyperplasia, a characteristic feature of oncocytes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical resection via thoracotomy and lobectomy was performed to remove the bronchial tumor.
  • Implications:

    • This case contributes to the limited literature on bronchial oncocytomas.
    • Successful surgical management and follow-up suggest a favorable prognosis for resectable bronchial oncocytomas.
    • Further research into the pathogenesis and optimal management of these rare tumors is warranted.
