Summary

The chemokine RANTES enhances adaptive mucosal and systemic immunity by boosting antibody production and T-cell responses. This suggests RANTES links innate signals to adaptive immunity.

Background:

  • RANTES (Regulated on Activation, Normal T Cell Expressed and Secreted) is a chemokine produced by mucosal immune cells.
  • Its role in adaptive mucosal immunity was previously uncharacterized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of RANTES on mucosal and systemic immune responses.
  • To elucidate the role of RANTES in adaptive immunity.

Main Methods:

  • Mice were nasally co-administered Ovalbumin (OVA) with or without RANTES.
  • Humoral and cellular immune responses were analyzed.
  • In vitro studies assessed T-cell activation and receptor expression.

Main Results:

  • RANTES significantly enhanced OVA-specific antibody responses in serum and mucosal secretions, including IgG subclasses.
