Summary

A new Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method accurately detects Streptococcus sobrinus and Streptococcus mutans, common cariogenic bacteria. This highly specific assay identifies S. sobrinus in 83% of dental plaque samples, revealing a higher prevalence than previously thought.
