Background:

  • Persistent, visually disabling vitreous opacities significantly impair daily function and quality of life.
  • Current treatment options for severe vitreous opacities are limited, necessitating evaluation of surgical approaches.

Observation:

  • A retrospective review of six eyes from five pseudophakic or aphakic male patients (age 58-66) with chronic, disabling vitreous opacities undergoing vitrectomy.
  • Postoperative assessment included subjective patient satisfaction questionnaires and the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-39 (NEI-VFQ-39).

Findings:

  • All patients experienced improved or stable Snellen visual acuity post-vitrectomy, with no surgical complications observed during an 8-44 month follow-up.
  • Subjective patient reports indicated high overall satisfaction with visual function.
