Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) affects 22.5% of primary Sjögren

Area of Science:

  • Otorhinolaryngology
  • Rheumatology
  • Audiology

Background:

  • Primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune disease primarily affecting exocrine glands.
  • Otorhinolaryngological manifestations, including hearing impairment, can occur in SS patients.
  • The pathogenesis and prevalence of hearing loss in SS require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of hearing loss in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome.
  • To identify factors associated with the development of hearing loss in SS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective evaluation of 45 female primary SS patients.
  • Comprehensive audiological assessment including pure tone audiometry, impedance audiometry, and speech audiometry.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Recording of disease manifestations, drug therapy, and autoantibody profiles.
  • Main Results:

    • Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) was detected in 22.5% of SS patients, predominantly affecting high frequencies.
    • SNHL was correlated with disease duration but not with age, systemic manifestations, autoantibodies, or drug therapy.
    • The site of cochlear damage was identified as the primary location of auditory impairment.

    Conclusions:

    • A significant proportion of primary SS patients exhibit SNHL of cochlear origin.
    • Disease duration is a key factor associated with SNHL in SS.
    • Further research is necessary to elucidate the mechanisms of inner ear involvement in SS.
