Summary

Premorbid lower performance IQ (PIQ) than verbal IQ (VIQ) may predict schizophrenia. This intellectual deficit, particularly on the PIQ scale, appears before psychotic symptoms manifest.

Background:

  • Schizophrenia is often associated with lower performance IQ (PIQ) compared to verbal IQ (VIQ).
  • It remains unclear if this PIQ < VIQ pattern precedes the onset of psychotic symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether premorbid differences in PIQ and VIQ scores predict the development of schizophrenia-related psychosis.
  • To examine intellectual functioning in individuals who later developed schizophrenia, affective disorders, or no psychiatric disorder.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study of 63 subjects assessed in childhood/adolescence (mean age 13.1 years).
  • Subjects were followed into adulthood (mean age 30.9 years) and diagnosed using RDC criteria.
  • Premorbid IQ scores (PIQ and VIQ) were analyzed in relation to psychiatric outcomes.
