Thyroid carcinosarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer. This rare tumor shows both epithelial and mesenchymal features, leading to a poor prognosis similar to anaplastic thyroid carcinoma.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Thyroid carcinosarcoma is an exceptionally rare and aggressive malignancy.
  • It presents a diagnostic challenge due to its mixed epithelial and mesenchymal components.

Observation:

  • A retrospective analysis of a patient with thyroid carcinosarcoma was performed.
  • Literature review identified only 19 previously reported cases.

Findings:

  • Thyroid carcinosarcoma exhibits aggressive behavior and a poor prognosis.
  • Clinical course and outcomes resemble those of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma.
  • Short survival is observed despite aggressive multimodal treatment strategies.

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment are crucial for managing this rare thyroid cancer.
