Summary

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) can cause stroke, even in young adults without risk factors. Treatment with steroids and albendazole effectively managed stroke symptoms in patients with arachnoiditis.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Vascular Neurology

Background:

  • Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a parasitic infection of the central nervous system.
  • Stroke is an under-recognized complication associated with NCC.

Observation:

  • Six young patients with NCC presented with stroke.
  • These patients lacked traditional vascular risk factors.
  • Arteritis leading to ischemic infarcts was observed.

Findings:

  • The severity of arachnoiditis correlated with arteritis and stroke.
  • All patients showed positive response to steroids and albendazole therapy.
  • Minimal residual neurological deficits were noted post-treatment.

Implications:

  • Highlights the link between NCC, arachnoiditis, and stroke in young individuals.
  • Suggests a therapeutic approach involving anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic agents.
  • Emphasizes the importance of considering NCC in stroke etiology for specific demographics.
