Area of Science:

  • Dental Hygiene Education
  • Curriculum Development
  • Interprofessional Education

Background:

  • Interdisciplinary education is increasingly recognized for its potential to enhance healthcare training.
  • Its specific role and implementation within dental hygiene curricula require further examination.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the role of interdisciplinary education in dental hygiene programs.
  • To identify factors influencing its implementation and educators' perceptions.
  • To explore perceived validity and barriers to interdisciplinary education.

Main Methods:

  • A 36-item questionnaire was distributed to directors of 216 U.S. dental hygiene programs.
  • Data collected included program demographics, participation in interdisciplinary activities, and attitudes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Response rate was 63% (n=136).
  • Main Results:

    • 31% of programs reported interdisciplinary activities; 15% included both clinical and didactic components.
    • Student participation was minimal, primarily in didactic coursework.
    • 74% of respondents believed students should participate in interdisciplinary experiences.
    • Lack of resources and time were cited as primary barriers.
    • Inconsistent interpretation of 'interdisciplinary' was noted.

    Conclusions:

    • Dental hygiene educators recognize the value of interdisciplinary education for students.
    • Significant barriers, including resource limitations and definitional ambiguity, hinder its integration.
    • Further research and standardized definitions are needed to facilitate effective implementation.
