This study reports the first known case of an osteolipoma, a rare lipoma containing bone tissue, found in the spine. The patient fully recovered after surgical removal of this unique spinal tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Spinal oncology
  • Surgical pathology
  • Bone and soft tissue tumors

Background:

  • Lipomatous tumors, such as lipomas, can present with rare histological components leading to symptoms.
  • Spinal lipomas are typically benign tumors composed of mature adipose tissue.
  • The presence of an osseous (bone) component in a lipoma has not been previously documented.

Observation:

  • A case of an intraspinal extradural tumor was identified.
  • The tumor was composed of both adipose tissue and bone tissue.
  • This unique tumor was histologically confirmed as an osteolipoma.

Findings:

  • Osteolipoma represents a newly described variant of lipomatous tumor.
  • The presented osteolipoma was located in the intraspinal extradural space.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The patient experienced a positive outcome following surgical resection of the osteolipoma.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the known spectrum of lipomatous tumor differentiation.
    • Understanding the etiology of osteolipomas may provide insights into tumor development.
    • Surgical resection appears to be an effective treatment for intraspinal osteolipomas, leading to good patient recovery.
