Summary

Non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in humans involves significant apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in retinal cells. This programmed cell death is often accompanied by necrosis, or uncontrolled cell death, particularly in the inner nuclear layer.
