Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Interventional Radiology

Background:

  • Duodenal diverticula are common but usually asymptomatic.
  • Hemorrhage is an infrequent complication of duodenal diverticula.
  • Massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding can be life-threatening.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding and hypovolemic shock.
  • The bleeding source was identified as a duodenal diverticulum.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis was confirmed via emergency angiography.
  • Superselective arterial embolization was successfully performed to control the hemorrhage.

Implications:

  • This case demonstrates the efficacy of superselective arterial embolization for duodenal diverticulum hemorrhage.
