Area of Science:

  • General Practice
  • Preventive Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Primary care physicians are vital for delivering preventive services.
  • Current levels of physician involvement in preventive care are often suboptimal.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the frequency of preventive interventions delivered by primary care physicians.
  • To identify factors associated with increased implementation of preventive activities.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of self-reported preventive activities in a stratified random sample of 635 primary care physicians.
  • Evaluation of interventions for cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Main Results:

  • Over 63% of physicians inquired about tobacco/alcohol use or checked blood pressure for most new patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Fewer physicians screened for intravenous drug use (33%), sexually transmitted diseases (14%), or sexual partners (6%).
  • Less than 33% had appropriate criteria for periodic preventive activities; group practice and nursing support correlated with higher activity.
  • Conclusions:

    • Organizational factors can enhance preventive care delivery in primary practice.
    • Preventive activity is inadequate, particularly for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and chronic disease screenings.
