Summary

Isolated tricuspid valve replacement shows poor outcomes. This surgery had a median survival of only 1.2 years, with high short and long-term mortality rates in patients.

Background:

The clinical outcomes of isolated tricuspid valve replacement are not well-defined.
This procedure is often performed concurrently with other cardiac valve surgeries.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the short- and long-term clinical outcomes of isolated tricuspid valve replacement.

Main Methods:

Retrospective study of 15 patients undergoing isolated tricuspid valve replacement between 1984 and 1996.
Analysis of patient demographics, cause of valve dysfunction, valve characteristics, prosthesis type, and survival data.

Main Results:

Median survival was 1.2 years.
Early mortality (<=30 days or before discharge) was 20%, and 3-year mortality was 40%.

Predictors of mortality included anasarca (short-term), anemia, rheumatic heart disease, prior stroke, and prior mitral valve surgery (long-term).

Conclusions:

Isolated tricuspid valve replacement is associated with poor short- and long-term clinical outcomes.
Further research is needed to improve outcomes for this patient population.
