Summary

Vertebral pneumatocysts, air-filled lesions in the spine, are more common than previously thought. These benign findings on CT scans do not require biopsy or follow-up.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Orthopedic Imaging
  • Spinal Pathology

Background:

  • Vertebral pneumatocysts are rare, benign intraosseous lesions.
  • Their prevalence and typical CT findings are not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and anatomical location of vertebral pneumatocysts.
  • To describe the characteristic computed tomography (CT) findings of these lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of CT scans from 89 patients with suspected disc disease.
  • Analysis of imaging findings over a 6-month period.

Main Results:

  • Ten vertebral pneumatocysts were identified in 8 patients (9% prevalence).
  • Lesions were found in the vertebral body (n=5) and near facet joints (n=5).
  • Association with vacuum phenomenon in adjacent intervertebral discs and facet joints was noted.

Conclusions:

  • Intraosseous pneumatocysts are benign and do not necessitate biopsy or follow-up.
  • These lesions appear more frequent than previously reported in the literature.
