Summary

Norway experienced its first hospital-acquired outbreak of ampicillin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (ARE) in 1995, which is still ongoing. Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) emerged a year later, particularly in areas with high vancomycin use.
