Synchronous oral leiomyosarcoma and squamous cell carcinoma

Background:

Findings:
- Immunohistochemistry revealed p53 overexpression in both SCC and leiomyosarcoma.
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and other molecular analyses did not detect p53 gene mutations, loss of heterozygosity, or microsatellite instability.
- The smooth muscle origin of the leiomyosarcoma was confirmed via immunohistochemical markers.
Implications:
- This case represents the first reported instance of synchronous oral leiomyosarcoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
- The findings highlight the potential for rare tumor combinations, even in the absence of typical risk factors.
- Further research is needed to understand the pathogenesis of such rare synchronous oral malignancies.
