Area of Science:

  • Bariatric surgery
  • Obesity management
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • The BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB) system was developed for obese patients.
  • Clinical possibilities were assessed regarding materials and application methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of the BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB) for weight loss in obese and morbidly obese patients.
  • To determine the optimal indications for BIB use in various patient populations.

Main Methods:

  • 132 obese patients (143 BIB placements) underwent endoscopic insertion and removal of the BIB.
  • Patients received a 800-1000 kcal/day diet with regular check-ups and dietitian consultations.
  • Procedures were performed under conscious sedation or general anesthesia, with balloon removal typically at 4 months.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Mean weight loss was 14.4 kg, and mean BMI reduction was 5.2.
  • Weight loss was more significant in male patients.
  • Observed complications included balloon intolerance (9 early removals), one deflation, and two gastric ulcers.

Conclusions:

  • BIB is indicated for extremely obese patients (BMI>40) preparing for bariatric surgery.
  • It is also suitable for obese patients (BMI 30-35) with unresolved chronic diseases.
  • Patients with BMI<30 may benefit within a multidisciplinary approach.
