Managed care organizations are entering the aesthetic surgery market. While most plastic surgeons oppose this, some will participate, and many expect colleagues and patients to engage with managed care plans for cosmetic procedures.

  • To assess surgeon and patient willingness to participate in MCO aesthetic surgery panels.
  • To determine the potential market penetration of MCOs in aesthetic surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was distributed to members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
  • 632 plastic surgeons completed the survey (54.5% response rate).
  • Data analyzed to identify factors associated with willingness to participate and anticipated patient behavior.

  • 22% of surgeons reported being approached by MCOs.
  • Approximately 25% of surgeons would participate in MCO aesthetic surgery panels.

  • Plastic surgeons need to understand MCO strategies and develop countermeasures to retain market control.
