Summary

High-density porous polyethylene orbital implants show excellent fibrovascular integration, indicating successful use in anophthalmic socket surgery. Further studies are needed to confirm long-term biocompatibility.

Background:

  • Orbital implants are crucial for anophthalmic socket reconstruction.
  • High-density porous polyethylene (MEDPOR) is a commonly used implant material.

Observation:

  • Histological analysis of MEDPOR implants explanted after 3 and 9 months was performed.
  • Two implants were removed due to migration and extrusion, respectively.

Findings:

  • Macroscopically, a fibrous pseudocapsule firmly adhered to the implant.
  • Histologically, fibrovascular tissue ingrowth was observed throughout the porous polyethylene structure.
  • Minimal inflammatory cell presence and no macrophagical activity were noted.

Implications:
