Simple exercise tests like the stair climbing (SC) test can assess maximum functional capacity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The six-minute walking (6MW) test measures exercise tolerance.

  • Debate exists regarding the clinical utility of simple exercise tests for assessing maximal effort versus exercise tolerance in COPD patients.
  • Understanding the stress levels and relationship to maximal aerobic capacity during common tests is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the stress levels during the six-minute walking (6MW) and stair climbing (SC) tests in COPD patients.
  • To determine the relationship between these simple tests and maximal aerobic capacity.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty patients with COPD (FEV1 49 +/- 19%) underwent spirometry, a progressive effort ergometric cycle (PEEC) test (measuring VO2, heart rate (HR), ventilatory response, dyspnea), and two 6MW and SC tests.
  • Data collected included distance, steps, HR, and dyspnea during the simple tests.

  • The progressive effort ergometric cycle (PEEC) test elicited higher HR compared to the 6MW and SC tests.
