    Summary

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) monitoring in prostate cancer patients revealed distinct responses to different chemotherapy regimens. LHRH analog treatment showed a transient PSA increase, while combination therapy led to a sustained plateau before gradual decline.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Pharmacology
    • Biochemistry

    Background:

    • Prostate cancer (PC) management requires effective monitoring tools.
    • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a key biomarker for PC.
    • Evaluating chemotherapy efficacy is crucial for patient outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the impact of two different chemotherapy regimens on serum PSA levels in PC patients.
    • To assess the utility of PSA as a monitoring marker during treatment.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum PSA levels were measured weekly for 52 weeks in two groups of PC patients.
    • Group 1 received estrogens, alkylating cytostatic, anthracycline antibiotic, and antimetabolite.
    • Group 2 received a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analog.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Group 2 (LHRH analog) showed a peak PSA at week 6, followed by a decrease to baseline by week 17.
    • Group 1 (combination therapy) exhibited a delayed PSA rise, plateauing by week 8, with levels returning to baseline around week 30-31.
    • Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) elevation was observed in 21.8% of Group 1 patients after 21-22 weeks.

    Conclusions:

    • Serum PSA levels demonstrate differential responses to various chemotherapy agents in prostate cancer.
    • PSA monitoring can be a valuable tool for assessing treatment response in PC.
    • Further investigation into drug-induced AFP changes may be warranted.
