Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pharmacology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Celecoxib is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor used for arthritis symptom management.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly prescribed for inflammatory conditions.
  • Visual disturbances are rare but potential adverse effects of NSAIDs.

Observation:

  • A 79-year-old female patient experienced atypical visual disturbances.
  • The visual disturbance was temporally associated with the use of celecoxib.
  • Symptoms resolved upon cessation of celecoxib therapy.

Findings:

  • The case suggests a potential link between celecoxib and the development of visual disturbances.
  • The patient's visual symptoms are consistent with rare side effects reported for traditional NSAIDs.
  • This highlights the importance of considering medication side effects in patients presenting with visual changes.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should be aware of potential visual side effects associated with celecoxib.
  • Further investigation may be warranted to understand the mechanism of NSAID-induced visual disturbances.
  • This case contributes to the understanding of adverse drug reactions in arthritis treatment.
