Summary

New protective suits significantly reduce heat strain during exercise in hot conditions. The Self Contained Toxic Environment Protective Outfit (STEPO) systems improved cooling and extended work tolerance compared to the standard Toxicological Agent Protective (TAP) suit.

Background:

  • Evaluating physiological heat strain is critical for personnel operating in hazardous environments.
  • Standard Toxicological Agent Protective (TAP) suits may impose significant heat stress during strenuous activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the physiological heat strain of two developmental Self Contained Toxic Environment Protective Outfit (STEPO) systems against the standard TAP suit.
  • To assess the effectiveness of STEPO systems in mitigating heat stress during exercise-heat exposure.

Main Methods:

  • Eight subjects (six men, two women) underwent treadmill exercise in a 38°C, 30% relative humidity environment.
  • Subjects wore either STEPO with rebreather (STEPO-R), STEPO with tether (STEPO-T), or the standard TAP suit.
  • Physiological parameters including body cooling, metabolic rate, heat storage, sweating rate, and time to heat exhaustion were measured.

  • STEPO systems provided significant body cooling (STEPO-R: 200W, STEPO-T: 186W), while the TAP suit offered no cooling.

  • Exposure time was significantly longer with STEPO-R (83 min) and STEPO-T (106 min) versus TAP (46 min), indicating improved work capability.

Conclusions:

  • The developmental STEPO systems effectively reduce physiological heat strain compared to the standard TAP suit.
  • STEPO enhances cooling, lowers heat storage, and increases work tolerance in exercise-heat stress conditions.
  • These findings suggest STEPO represents an advancement in protective clothing for improved performance and safety.
