Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the anatomical relationship between diaphragmatic grooves and Couinaud's portal segments.
  • To determine if grooves serve as reliable landmarks for identifying liver segmental borders.

  • Macroscopic examination of 50 human livers from 420 cadavers.
  • Identification and mapping of 79 grooves on the diaphragmatic liver surfaces.
  • Correlation of groove locations with Couinaud's segmental borders (segments VIII, IV, and VII).

  • The majority of grooves (70/79) were located within segment VIII, either wholly or partially.
  • Only 11 grooves were identified at the border between two segments (VIII/IV or VIII/VII).

  • Diaphragmatic grooves are not consistently located at the borders of Couinaud's liver segments.
  • Grooves likely form later in development, post-segmentalization, due to diaphragmatic growth.
  • These grooves are not reliable anatomical landmarks for surgical navigation of liver segments.
