Chronic alcoholism is linked to elevated leptin levels, a hormone regulating appetite. This increase is dose-dependent on ethanol consumption and occurs regardless of nutritional status or liver disease in active alcoholics.

  • To investigate serum leptin levels in active alcoholics, abstinent alcoholics, and controls.

  • Serum leptin levels were measured in 60 active asymptomatic alcoholics, 20 with cirrhosis, 20 abstinent alcoholics, and 60 controls.
  • Nutritional status and ethanol consumption were assessed in all participants.
