Background:

Bladder cancer incidence is high in Vallès Occidental, an area with a significant textile industry.
Previous studies suggested a link between textile work and bladder cancer, necessitating further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify occupations and industries with high bladder cancer risk in a region with a prevalent textile sector.
To evaluate the association between textile industry employment and bladder cancer risk.

Main Methods:

A case-referent study was conducted with 218 bladder cancer cases and 344 controls.
Occupational histories, sociodemographic data, and lifestyle factors were collected via personal interviews.
Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were adjusted for age, gender, and smoking.

Main Results:

No overall increased risk for the textile industry (OR 1.13, 95% CI 0.79-1.63).
Elevated risk observed for spinners and winders with over 20 years of employment (OR 3.28, 95% CI 1.08-9.97).
Increased risk noted for machine setters employed between 1960-1974 (OR 4.26, 95% CI 1.09-16.7).

Conclusions:

Findings do not support a general increased bladder cancer risk in the textile industry.
Specific roles with high exposure, such as spinners, winders, and machine setters, showed elevated risks.
