Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Thoracic aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition.
  • Hemorrhagic pleural effusion is an uncommon presentation.

Observation:

  • Two cases of massive right hemorrhagic pleural effusion were observed.
  • These effusions were associated with descending aorta dissection (Type B).

Findings:

  • Tomographic scans confirmed descending aorta dissection.
  • Transesophageal echocardiography excluded ascending aorta dissection.
  • Right hemorrhagic pleural effusion is an unusual sign in thoracic aorta dissection.

Implications:

  • This presentation highlights a rare clinical manifestation of aortic dissection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research is needed to elucidate the pathophysiology of this sign.
  • Early recognition may improve diagnostic timelines for aortic emergencies.
