Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Psychiatry
  • Women's Health

Background:

  • Intractable idiopathic constipation in women frequently co-occurs with psychosocial issues.
  • Understanding psychological factors is crucial for managing chronic constipation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between past and current psychological factors and both slow transit constipation (STC) and normal transit constipation (NTC).

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-eight women referred for biofeedback underwent interviews and psychological assessments.
  • Transit studies differentiated between STC (12 patients) and NTC (16 patients).
  • Assessments included psychiatric diagnoses, family/social history, and self-rating scales for distress and eating attitudes.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • 61% of patients had a current psychiatric disorder, and 64% had a previous episode.
  • STC patients reported higher psychosocial distress and a longer symptom duration (24.3 years) compared to NTC patients.
  • Adverse life events or gynecological procedures were common before constipation onset in STC patients.

Conclusions:

  • A significant proportion of women with intractable constipation exhibit current (60%) or past (66%) affective disorders.
  • While STC is linked to psychological distress, it doesn't necessarily imply gross functional impairment.
  • Routine psychological evaluation for patients with chronic constipation presenting to surgical departments is advised.
