Long-term vigabatrin treatment for epilepsy is linked to a high prevalence of visual field defects. Early detection through serial campimetry is crucial, as clinical signs often appear late.

Background:

Observation:

  • This study investigated the prevalence and characteristics of visual field changes in adult epilepsy patients on long-term vigabatrin.
  • Ophthalmological examinations included visual field testing (campimetry), funduscopy, visual evoked potentials (VEPs), and electroretinography (ERG).

Findings:

  • 60% of patients (6 out of 10) exhibited campimetric alterations, with 20% showing severe defects.
  • Optic nerve pallor was observed in 20% of patients.
