Summary

Parkinson's disease patients with dominant side involvement show higher depression scores. This suggests depression in Parkinson's may originate in the dominant hemisphere, irrespective of disease stage or L-dopa treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Depression is frequently observed in Parkinson's disease (PD).
  • Depression in PD is not correlated with disease stage or L-dopa treatment response.
  • Prior research suggests a potential link between right-sided Parkinsonism and increased depression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if primary affection of the dominant side in Parkinson's disease correlates with higher depression levels.
  • To assess if dominant side involvement is associated with greater decline in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and motor function (UPDRSm).

Main Methods:

  • 63 patients with early-stage Parkinsonism (Hoehn and Yahr stage 1-1.5) were studied.
  • Patients were divided into L-dopa treated (Dopa group) and newly diagnosed (Naive group).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Evaluations included the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, UPDRSm, and ADLs scale, analyzed using Wilcoxon's test (p < 0.01).
  • Main Results:

    • Patients with dominant side affected exhibited significantly higher depression scores in both groups (p < 0.001).
    • No significant differences were found in UPDRSm or ADLs scores between groups based on dominant side involvement.

    Conclusions:

    • Primary affection of the dominant side in Parkinson's disease is linked to increased depression.
    • Findings suggest that depression in Parkinson's disease may originate in the dominant hemisphere.
