Summary

Ulcerative colitis (UC) can affect the duodenum, challenging the notion that it only impacts the colon. Further research is needed to confirm the duodenum as a UC target organ, particularly without steroid use.

Background:

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic colonic inflammatory disease with unknown causes.
  • The colon is the primary affected organ, with duodenal involvement being rare.
  • Varied clinical manifestations exist in UC, but the duodenum is not typically considered a target organ.

Observation:

  • This study reports two cases of ulcerative duodenitis with colitis, consistent with UC.
  • A review of six additional cases of ulcerative duodenitis associated with UC was conducted.
  • The patients presented with steroid-responsive inflammation.

Findings:

  • Duodenal lesions in conjunction with UC may occur more frequently than previously recognized.
  • Clinical manifestation of duodenal lesions in UC can be infrequent, especially under steroid therapy.
