Summary

Myositis, a rare muscle inflammation, can cause weakness in patients with Crohn's disease. This condition should be considered in the differential diagnosis for unexplained muscle symptoms in inflammatory bowel disease patients.

Background:

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn's disease, primarily affects the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Extraintestinal manifestations of IBD are common but can be diverse.
  • Muscle weakness is an uncommon presenting symptom in IBD patients.

Observation:

  • A patient with Crohn's disease presented with proximal muscle weakness.
  • Laboratory tests revealed elevated serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels.
  • Electromyography (EMG) showed abnormalities consistent with muscle damage.

Findings:

  • A muscle biopsy was performed but yielded non-diagnostic results.
  • Despite the non-diagnostic biopsy, the clinical presentation suggested myositis.
