Background:

  • Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain and sleep disturbances.
  • Alpha electroencephalographic (EEG) activity, typically associated with wakefulness, has been observed during non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep in some fibromyalgia patients.
  • The clinical significance of these alpha sleep patterns in fibromyalgia remains incompletely understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and classify distinct patterns of alpha electroencephalographic (EEG) activity during non-REM sleep in patients with fibromyalgia.
  • To examine the association between these identified alpha sleep patterns and the clinical manifestations of pain and sleep quality in fibromyalgia patients.

Main Methods:

  • Overnight polysomnography was conducted on 40 female fibromyalgia patients and 43 healthy controls.

    • Alpha intrusion during sleep presents in distinct patterns in fibromyalgia.
    • Phasic alpha sleep activity demonstrates the strongest correlation with the clinical symptoms of fibromyalgia, suggesting its importance in disease presentation and management.
