    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Immunology
    • Parasitology

    Background:

    • Clinical similarities between malaria and endotoxin fever suggest a potential role for endotoxins in malaria.
    • Endotoxin tolerance observed in malaria patients further supports this hypothesis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine if endotoxin or endotoxin-like substances are present in malaria infections.
    • To investigate the association between malarial fever and endotoxin levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized the Limulus test to detect endotoxin or endotoxin-like activity.
    • Analyzed plasma samples from humans and monkeys infected with Plasmodia.

    Main Results:

    • Endotoxin or endotoxin-like activity was not detectable in the plasma of infected humans or monkeys.
    • The febrile paroxysm of malarial infection did not correlate with detectable blood endotoxin levels.

    Conclusions:

    • The febrile response in malaria is unlikely to be caused by detectable levels of endotoxin in the blood.
    • Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind malarial fever.
