    Summary

    Inhaling oxygen with carbon dioxide during hemorrhagic shock in rabbits did not affect capillary perfusion, despite increased venous oxygen levels. This finding is independent of when the treatment began.

    Background:

    • Hemorrhagic shock leads to impaired tissue oxygenation.
    • The role of inhaled carbon dioxide in managing shock is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of inhaling an oxygen and carbon dioxide mixture versus pure oxygen on rabbits in hemorrhagic shock.
    • To determine the impact on respiratory acidosis, blood lactate, base deficit, and venous oxygen partial pressure (PvO2).

    Main Methods:

    • Rabbits were subjected to controlled bleeding to induce hemorrhagic shock (mean arterial pressure of 25 mmHg).
    • Inhalation treatments included a 90% oxygen and 10% carbon dioxide mixture or pure oxygen.
    • Physiological parameters such as respiratory acidosis, blood lactate, base deficit, and PvO2 were measured.

    Main Results:

    • Rabbits inhaling oxygen with carbon dioxide developed respiratory acidosis.
    • Both treatment groups showed similar changes in blood lactate and base deficit.
    • Inhaling oxygen with carbon dioxide resulted in significantly higher PvO2 compared to pure oxygen.
    • These effects were observed regardless of whether inhalation started before or after bleeding.

    Conclusions:

    • Inhaling carbon dioxide with oxygen during hemorrhagic shock increases venous oxygenation.
    • Despite increased shunting, capillary perfusion remains unaffected by inhaled carbon dioxide in this shock model.
