Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Internal Medicine

Background:

  • Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel condition.
  • Ascites, or abdominal fluid accumulation, is not a typical Crohn's complication.

Observation:

  • A 36-year-old female with Crohn's disease developed ascites during her illness.
  • This ascites appeared during follow-up, unrelated to other known complications like vein thrombosis.

Findings:

  • The patient required paracenteses to drain the ascites.
  • No cause for the ascites was identified other than Crohn's disease itself.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a previously undescribed presentation of Crohn's disease.
  • Ascites may occur as a complication of Crohn's disease, mirroring its acute phases.
