Summary

Non-fermenting gram-negative bacteria (NFGNB) were identified in urine samples. Most NFGNB isolates showed sensitivity to norfloxacin and ofloxacin, but resistance to penicillin and tetracycline.

Background:

  • Non-fermenting gram-negative bacteria (NFGNB) are significant opportunistic pathogens.
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common, and NFGNB can cause complicated UTIs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and identify NFGNB from urine samples.
  • To determine the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of isolated NFGNB.

Main Methods:

  • Bacterial isolates were obtained from 7,784 urine samples.
  • Isolation and identification of NFGNB were performed.
  • Antibiotic susceptibility testing was conducted using various agents.

Main Results:

  • Sixty-four NFGNB strains were isolated (4.4% of total isolates).
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most prevalent species (67.2%).
  • High sensitivity was observed for norfloxacin and ofloxacin (50-88.8%), while resistance to penicillin and tetracycline was noted in all isolates.

Conclusions:

  • NFGNB are found in urine samples, with P. aeruginosa being the most common.
  • Fluoroquinolones like norfloxacin and ofloxacin are effective against these isolates.
  • Antibiotic resistance patterns highlight the need for judicious antibiotic use in UTIs caused by NFGNB.
