Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Liposarcomas represent 20% of soft tissue sarcomas.
  • Retroperitoneal liposarcomas account for 14% of liposarcomas, often originating from perirenal fat.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with symptoms of abdominal pain, distension, and weight gain.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large retroperitoneal tumor, suspected to be a well-differentiated liposarcoma.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent successful curative resection of the massive retroperitoneal liposarcoma.
  • Complete tumor excision is critical, as only 50% of cases achieve this, with a 90% recurrence rate within 10 years.

Implications:

  • Curative resection remains the primary treatment for primary and recurrent liposarcomas.
