Increasing prevalence of multiple sclerosis in Finland.

Summary

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) prevalence increased significantly in Seinäjoki and Uusimaa, Finland, between 1983 and 1993. Seinäjoki now reports some of the highest MS prevalence and incidence rates globally.

Background:

Previous studies tracked Multiple Sclerosis (MS) epidemiology in western and southern Finland from 1964 to 1978.
This study updates MS prevalence trends from 1983 to 1993 in these regions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the prevalence trends of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in western and southern Finland between 1983 and 1993.
To correlate updated MS prevalence with incidence trends during the same period.

Main Methods:

Calculated age-adjusted and age-specific MS prevalence rates.
Utilized Poser's criteria for case classification.

Main Results:

In 1993, MS prevalence was 202/10(5) in Seinäjoki, 111/10(5) in Vaasa, and 108/10(5) in Uusimaa.

Seinäjoki showed a 1.7-fold increase in prevalence from 1983 to 1993, linked to rising incidence.

Uusimaa exhibited a 1.2-fold prevalence increase with stable incidence, while Vaasa showed stable prevalence despite declining incidence.

Conclusions:

MS prevalence is increasing in Seinäjoki and Uusimaa, but not in Vaasa.
Seinäjoki demonstrates both the highest prevalence and incidence rates reported in the study period.
