Metastatic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) to soft tissues is rare. This report details two cases of soft tissue SCC metastasis from cervical and scalp primary tumors, treated with surgery and radiation.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Metastatic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) to soft tissues is an exceptionally rare clinical presentation.
  • Primary SCCs of the cervix and scalp are typically treated with localized therapies, with distant metastasis being uncommon.

Observation:

  • A 63-year-old woman with cervical SCC developed a soft tissue metastasis to the scapula.
  • A 46-year-old man with scalp SCC and a history of immunosuppression due to kidney transplantation presented with a soft tissue metastasis in the arm.

Findings:

  • Both patients underwent aggressive surgical resection and radiation therapy.
  • Biopsies confirmed metastatic SCC in both soft tissue masses.
  • Both patients achieved disease-free status at 12 and 8 months post-treatment, respectively.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case series highlights the unusual presentation of soft tissue metastasis from cervical and scalp SCC.
  • The optimal treatment and prognosis for such rare metastases remain undefined.
  • Multimodal therapy including surgery and radiation may offer curative potential.
